A Limescale Rescue Story

Here at Sparkling Clean, we love a challenge. But last week, we received a message from a local mum, that truly highlighted just how frustrating household cleaning can be. Her daughter had just bought a new home, and the bathroom shower screen was completely covered in a thick, cloudy layer of stubborn limescale.

She had already spent a gruelling three hours on her hands and knees scrubbing it, but it had barely made a dent. Out of sheer desperation, she had even started trying to scrape the crust away with a screwdriver!

• Check for "Glass Cancer" First: Run your fingers over the dry glass. If it feels completely smooth but looks white and cloudy, it is likely "etched" or corroded from minerals—sadly, this cannot be cleaned. If it feels rough or bumpy, that is limescale sitting on the surface, which can be saved!
  
• Use the Right Gel: Standard liquid cleaners run straight down vertical glass panels. We recommend using an eco-friendly limescale gel (like Kilrock) that clings to the surface, giving it 10–15 minutes to break down the minerals safely without toxic fumes.
  
• The Secret Weapon: Instead of a harsh abrasive or a screwdriver (which will permanently scratch the glass!), use ultra-fine 0000 grade steel wool. It is incredibly gentle and polishes away softened limescale beautifully. Always test a small hidden corner first!
  
• Scrape Safely: If you must use a blade for thick crust, use a proper glass scraper held strictly at a 45-degree angle on completely wet glass.
